Funding
Following a number of years of internal deterioration, due to water penetration, funding was sought to rectify the problems. In 2016 St Martin's PCC were successful in receiving a heritage grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
The grant was to cover 80% of the repair and improvement works and professional fees.
The remaining 20% had to be met by the PCC which was quite a challenge for a small rural church with an even smaller congregation. However the challenge was met and achieved.

RESTORATION
The Aim
The interior of the church was suffering from spalling plaster, high humidity and saturated walls and floors. The cause of the dampness was blocked and backed up soakaways and drains which meant that rainwater was trapped around the base of the building. |
INVESTIGATION
Brooks Building Consultants, a conservation surveying company was appointed to administer the works and a local contractor - Allen Construction - won the tender. EXCAVATION Works commenced in June 2017 with the digging of new drains. An archaeologist was present throughout as a number of unmarked graves were disturbed. EXTERNAL COMPLETION New drains were provided to the perimeter of the building along with roof repairs, repointing and replacement of downpipes. Damaged plaster was removed internally and the building left to dry for six months. Works recommenced in April 2018 with replastering and complete internal redecoration. |
